The 78th Hand-rubbed Sencha Competition in Kansai

The bidding event for the 78th Kansai Tea Competition was held on September 3, 2026, in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture.
This year, we successfully placed winning bids for numerous award-winning teas-most notably the first-prize tea that received the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award, the highest honor of the competition.

On September 25, the producer of the tea that won the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award visited Kanjo-en, where they took a commemorative photo with our company president.

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award 1st place winning tea

This tea achieved the highest possible acclaim-winning the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award and taking first place-in the *sencha* category at the 78th Kansai Tea Competition, held on September 3, 2026, at the Suzuka Agricultural Cooperative in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture. We successfully bid on this tea to commemorate our company's 130th anniversary, a purchase that stands out even among our 33 consecutive years of acquiring award-winning teas. Cultivated with meticulous care by Ms. Midori Nakanishi of Odai Town, Taki District, Mie Prefecture, this tea offers a refreshing aroma, rich body, and distinct sweetness.

Teas entered into such competitions are produced with the grower's honor at stake, requiring special attention starting from the very soil. Organic fertilizer is added to the earth, and cuttings are planted only after the soil has become sufficiently rich-a process taking two years. The tea bushes are then nurtured for approximately three years before the leaves are harvested for the first time, just as the young shoots are in their prime growth phase.

Freshness is paramount for Japanese tea. A team of over a dozen veteran hand-pickers harvests the leaves quickly; they are immediately steamed and then dried while being hand-rolled by a master craftsman.
The tea is evaluated based on four criteria: aroma, appearance, flavor, and liquor color. The maximum possible score is 200 points.
This particular tea achieved a perfect score (200 points) in all four categories.

Please brew this tea using water heated to approximately 70℃. It reveals a traditional golden hue, a sweet "shaded-growth" aroma (*ooi-ka*), and a burst of refreshing tea fragrance; a single sip fills you with a sense of deep satisfaction. Tea of this quality is a rare find. It makes an exquisite gift-whether for a loved one, a fellow tea enthusiast, or as a special treat for yourself.

Here lies the true bliss of tea.

To mark Kaburagien's 130th anniversary, we are offering this year's finest tea-setting aside profit considerations-so that you may enjoy it to the fullest. We hope you enjoy it.
